Electric Cars in the UK

By 2030, according to government statistics, an estimated 7 out of 10 cars will be electric and preparations are being made by the National Grid to provide for 36 million electric cars by 2040. The government’s ‘Road to Zero Strategy’, as well as the increased costs associated with running car engines on conventional petrol and diesel fuels, is creating a growing demand for zero-emission vehicle technology.

Electric cars are here to stay, but these electric vehicles require infrastructure in the form of an effective network of charging points. Most people assume that is the owners of these electric vehicles who will bear the brunt of costs for the required infrastructure costs – this is not the case.

The majority of the cost of the required infrastructure enhancements will be incurred by land developers, land owners and the associated architects and contractors. For example, in London 20% of the parking spaces in all new workplace and residential developments must provide electrical charging points.
